WithholdRight is a free informational website. We do not charge users to access the calculator or to read our articles, and we never sell user data. Our revenue comes from display advertising. This page explains, in plain language, how that works and how we keep editorial independence from advertisers.

1. How We Make Money

WithholdRight is funded primarily through display advertising served by Google AdSense and similar advertising networks. Advertisers pay these networks to display ads on websites like ours; the networks pay us a share of that revenue based on ad impressions and clicks. We have no direct relationship with most advertisers, and we do not know which specific advertiser is shown to any specific visitor.

In the future, we may add other revenue streams, including direct sponsorships of specific content categories, affiliate links to tax preparation software or payroll services, or premium paid features. If we add any of these, we will update this disclosure and clearly label any sponsored or affiliate content in accordance with Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidance.

2. Editorial Independence

Advertising and editorial content are strictly separated at WithholdRight. Advertisers have no input on:

  • The tax rates, brackets, and rules we publish.
  • The methodology our calculator uses.
  • The conclusions we reach in any article.
  • Whether we recommend, criticize, or remain neutral about any tax software provider, payroll company, or financial institution.
  • The order in which articles are published or featured.

Our editorial team writes, fact-checks, and reviews all content before publication. Advertisers do not see content before it is published, and they cannot request changes to published content. If an advertiser requests editorial coverage, we will decline the request or clearly label the resulting content as sponsored.

3. Google AdSense

We currently display advertising through Google AdSense. When you visit the Site, Google may set advertising cookies on your browser and use them, together with your browsing history across other AdSense publisher sites, to show you ads it believes are relevant to your interests. Specifically:

  • Personalized ads (where permitted): Google uses cookies (DSID, IDE, NID, and others) to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.
  • Non-personalized ads (where required): In jurisdictions that require consent for personalized advertising (including the EEA, UK, and Switzerland), we use Google Consent Mode v2. If you decline non-essential cookies, Google will show you contextual ads that are not based on your browsing history.
  • Opt out: You can opt out of personalized advertising at any time at Google Ads Settings or aboutads.info/choices.

4. Ad Placement and Density

We follow Google's Valuable Inventory policy, which requires that advertising not exceed the content on any page. Practically, this means:

  • Ad units appear only on article pages and the homepage, not on the calculator results display.
  • We do not place ads in a way that disrupts calculator use or article reading.
  • We do not use pop-ups, pop-unders, interstitials, or auto-playing audio.
  • We do not place ads that mimic system warnings, dialog boxes, or other interface elements.
  • Ads are clearly labeled as "Sponsored," "Advertisement," or with a similar Google-provided label.

5. Affiliate Links (Future)

At the time of this update, we do not display affiliate links. If we add affiliate links in the future (for example, to tax preparation software we have reviewed), we will:

  • Clearly label each affiliate link with the word "affiliate" or an equivalent disclosure.
  • Include a brief disclosure at the top of any article containing affiliate links.
  • Update this Advertising Disclosure page to describe the affiliate relationships.
  • Continue to apply the same editorial independence standard: we will only affiliate with products we have independently evaluated.

6. Sponsored Content (Future)

If we publish sponsored articles or sponsored sections in the future, we will:

  • Label the content as "Sponsored," "Advertisement," or "Promoted" at the top and at every screen breakpoint.
  • Name the sponsor in the byline or in a clearly visible author box.
  • Apply the same factual accuracy standard to sponsored content as to editorial content.
  • Exclude sponsored content from sitemaps marked as editorial, so that search engines and AI tools can distinguish them.

7. How Advertisers Get on the Site

With Google AdSense, advertisers do not buy ads on WithholdRight directly. Instead, they bid in real time for ad space across Google's network of publisher sites. We do not control which ads are shown to which visitors, although we can block specific advertisers, ad categories, or sensitive ad types through AdSense's controls. We use category blocking to exclude ads we believe are inconsistent with the Site's purpose, including ads for gambling, weapons, adult content, and certain financial products.

If you see an ad on the Site that you believe is misleading, offensive, or otherwise inappropriate, please report it to us at contact@1an.site so we can investigate and block the advertiser if appropriate.

8. No Payola

We do not accept payment for:

  • Positive coverage of any company, product, or service in our articles.
  • Inclusion of any company, product, or service in a "best of" or "top 10" list.
  • Removal of criticism or negative coverage of any company, product, or service.
  • Editorial recommendations, calculators, or methodology decisions.

If a representative of any company offers us payment for any of these, we will refuse and document the offer.

9. Reviewer Independence

Our CPA and Enrolled Agent reviewers are not employed by, affiliated with, or compensated by any tax software provider, payroll provider, accounting firm, or financial institution. Reviewers are compensated only for the time spent reviewing content. Reviewers are not permitted to hold positions that would create a conflict of interest with our editorial mission.

10. User Cost

WithholdRight is free to use. There is no charge for the calculator, no charge for reading articles, no signup requirement, no email requirement, and no paywall. You may encounter ads on the Site, but you are never required to click on or interact with them. The Site is supported entirely by advertising revenue.

11. Compliance with FTC Endorsement Guides

This disclosure complies with the FTC's Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising (16 CFR Part 255) and the FTC's Dot Com Disclosures guidance. Where we publish content that could reasonably be construed as an endorsement — even an implicit one — we disclose any material connection between WithholdRight and the endorsed party.

12. Changes to This Disclosure

If we change our advertising model, add affiliate relationships, accept sponsorships, or make other material changes to how we generate revenue, we will update this page and revise the "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
